My dear the Propers of each old Mass likewise and more deeply emphasize the theme of each Mass. They are Scriptures from the Old and New Testaments reinforcing the messages of the Epistle and Gospel at 5 more points, woven through the Mass like the one Responsorial Psalm of the Ordinary Form. I know because I chant them. We read and meditate on the translations, which aren’t spoonfed to us. If it matters to you, you’ll seek them out in a missal or online printables.

The Liturgy of the Hours eliminated 3 imprecatory Psalms for no other reason than that they make people uncomfortable. But all the Psalms, including ”i will make your enemies your footstool,” are the words of God. You may say, well, what’s the big deal of 3 Psalms with ugly words not deemed worthy of prayer by the Council? Someone should have told them it’s not up to them to pick and choose Scriptures according to contemporary sensibilities.

The smaller lectionary serves a greater purpose than the comprehension of salvation history for the worshippers. The less but more often repeated readings in the TLM are more important, core Scriptures which we internalize over years of the same. Christians may receive knowledge from Bible studies, but the Mass is a sacrifice for God, not for us.
